This frenzied shopping day that marks the beginning of the holiday season, is a phenomenon that has transcended its origins to become a global consumer extravaganza.

Each year as retailers we all jump two feet into Black Friday events, but where does it come from?

The Origins of Black Friday

Black Friday’s roots can be traced back to the mid-20th century. The term was initially coined in the 1960s in Philadelphia to describe the chaotic post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy. It wasn’t associated with bargains or deals; instead, it referred to the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that clogged the city streets as shoppers and tourists swarmed the area. The term “Black Friday” was not initially seen as positive but rather as a description of the congestion and disorder that accompanied the day.

The Shift from Chaos to Consumerism

Does Alcohol Make a Good Gift?

Today we’re going to be talking about all things alcohol and whether or not it makes a good gift in the run up to the festive season. Here at Welsh Witch Craft Spirits, we’re all about the magical experience which unfolds within the bottles of our handcrafted drinks. Each sip is a journey through Celtic pagan folklore and Welsh-inspired botanicals to tickle those tastebuds.

The short answer, to ‘does alcohol make a good gift?’, is YES! But of course, it is a lot more nuanced than that. We’re going to be unpicking the best way to gift alcohol and some alternatives to spirits as well.

This is probably the key takeaway from this discussion. Of course, alcohol is a great gift for many, but understanding the recipient is the best way to make a decision whether or not alcohol is a good gifting choice. Does the gift recipient like alcohol, is the first question to ask. Is it something they would enjoy, whether with friends or of an evening with a meal? If yes, this is a good start.

It then becomes a matter of ‘what alcohol do they like?’ and you can branch into one of our delicious hand-crafted gins, rums, or vodka too if that’s more their taste. A Guide To Making Gin From The Welsh Witch

Our award-winning craft spirits are made using tried and tested methods, Welsh-inspired ingredients and the knowledge of wise folklore to brew our magical potions. Not only is each spirit hand-bottled, hand-corked and waxed for that mystical apothecary style, they’re packed and labelled by hand for maximum quality every time. Each of our spirits goes through their own carefully crafted small batch process. Today we’re going to delve into the magical secrets of the Welsh Witch and share a little bit about how gin is made, and what makes our crafted potions extra special.

The process of gin making

To create our Welsh Witch Craft Gins, we use the London Dry Gin process, an age-old method which we find to be the best for our products. We start with our base of NGS (which stands for neutral grain spirit), which is what is used as the foundations of any white spirit. At this point, we mix our NGS with Welsh Water, which we use to keep our spirits packed with as many Welsh ingredients as we can. We source our Welsh water from the Ffynnon Beuno well, where it is believed over centuries to have healing powers within it. This intertwines our beloved Welsh folklore with our spirits right from the get-go.

 

Using the moon cycles during our crafting process

This base of NGS and Welsh water is then left to charge under a full moon cycle, with 21 litres of water charged within each batch. We do this to invite the lunar energy to cleanse and age our spirits to perfection, integrating this pagan tradition into our Welsh Witch drinks. Then comes the fun part: we add botanicals. This is the part that feels like brewing a magic potion.

Adding high quality ingredients to our vapour and boil, this is where our spirits get their unique flavours. We may add cinnamon or rosewater if we’re making our Beltane Gin, or we would add gorseflower, coriander seed and bitter orange for that unique Welsh Witch Original Dry Gin flavour. This is then processed to a stable temperature and we take 50ml of heads with the rest run through the process.

Next begins the testing process of volume, liquid and ABV. This is an important step which includes cutting with water to reach that 40% ABV in order to be bottled and follow regulations. It is then once again left to rest over a full lunar cycle in order to infuse and brew that magic that is known and loved in Welsh Witch Craft Spirits.

Because each of our spirits is made in small batches, it means we can check for the highest quality in each one. Our expertise means that magic is guaranteed in each hand-poured bottle, and each one comes from the wonderful brain of founder and Welsh Witch herself, Jade. Bottled in house in our Wrexham distillery, our spirits are a perfect first step into learning about mystical Welsh folklore and ancient celtic pagan traditions.

Finished with care and touches of sparkle

Each bottle before it reaches the shops or your hands is hand-finished with a cork and sealed with wax, as well as a beautiful mystical label: part of our iconic witchy branding. 5 Vodka Cocktails for summer and beyond

Wrexham Mule

With our now famous town on the map thanks to the Hollywood fairy tale surrounding our football club we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to create a local twist on a classic vodka cocktail.

Wrexham is also famed for the quality of its underground water reserves, which gave rise to its previous dominance as a major brewing centre. Both Welsh Water and the first gain celebrated by Lammas are at the heart of our new Vodka.

Ingredients you’ll need:

To garnish

  • Lime
  • Splash of grenadine

Pour the vodka into a metal mug, julep tin or tumbler. Load up ¾ full of crushed ice, then fill to the top with the ginger ale and stir gently to combine. Add a few dashes of ginger bitters.

Serve with splash of grenadine to add the Wrexham fiery red colour and finish with a squeeze of lime and the wedges on top.

Summer Breeze

On a beautiful summer day, you can’t beat a light, chilled, refreshing cocktail, and they don’t come more refreshing than a summer’s breeze.

Ingredients you’ll need:

To garnish

  • Garnish with a lime wedge

Take a chilled glass (coupe glass preferable). Shake and strain the ingredients with lots of ice cubes and then pour. Finish with orange zest shavings.

Cosmopolitan

You can’t talk about vodka cocktails without including the very classic Cosmopolitan, with its famous sweet with just a touch of tang taste.

What’s more how else would you describe sipping cocktail at a summer get-together other than ‘how very Cosmopolitan!’

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • 45ml Welsh Witch Lammas Vodka
  • 20ml Cointreau
  • Splash of cranberry Juice
  • Squeeze of lime

To garnish

  • Garnish with a lemon twist

 

 

 

Combine all the liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini or nick & nora glass. Garnish with lemon twist.

Welsh Vodka Fizz

This refreshing cocktail is a trifecta of sweet, minty, and tangy. This is a great cocktail to enjoy on a hot summer day by the pool.

Ingredients you’ll need:

To garnish

  • Garnish with a lemon slice

Pour vodka, lemon juice, and mint simple syrup into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a glass filled with ice and top up the glass with club soda. Garnish with a slice of lemon.

Espresso Martini

And finally……we couldn’t leave out the Espresso Martini as one of the great vodka cocktails to come out of the 1980s. Invented by famed bartender Dick Bradsell, some say he first shook one up for super model Kate Moss.

Ingredients you’ll need:

To garnish

  • 3 Whole Coffee Beans

 

 

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add Welsh Witch Vodka Lammas Vodka, Kahlúa, and Espresso. Shake well to get the foam on top and strain it into a cocktail or martini glass. Garnish by placing three coffee beans on top.

Today we’re bringing you a gorgeous traditional Welsh recipe of the classic Bara Brith; similar to a traditional tea loaf. This iconic Welsh cake has got a luxurious upgrade with a recipe for a Welsh Witch Spiced Rum butter sauce to drizzle over a Bara Brith, a sticky toffee pudding, or …..your pancakes!

This easy but warming recipe is a perfect addition to your pancake day feast festive to-do list. This Spiced Rum Butter only has five ingredients too, so it’s deliciously easy while being a complete dessert gamechanger.

First off, you’ll need a bottle of our warming Welsh Witch Spiced Rum, which you can purchase right here on wild-moon.co.uk. The notes of vanilla, cinnamon and a whisper of whiskey make this rum butter a luxurious addition to any traditional pudding or cake.   • ¼ cup brown sugar (granulated or demerara works if you don’t have soft brown sugar)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (you can substitute a vegan alternative here too)
  • A dash of vanilla extract

These ingredients make approximately 6-8 servings worth, a perfect amount for sharing with friends and family in those cosy evenings.

The Method

What you’re going to need to do is slowly melt your unsalted butter in a pan over a low heat. Once this is melted, you can add in the brown sugar. Whisk this gently and make sure not to let it burn, a low heat should do the trick as the sugar begins to mix with the butter. Depending on which type of sugar you use, this may take a little while – but we promise the wait will be worth it. Once they have combined nicely, you’ll want to add in your double cream and whisk to incorporate. It should look a lovely golden caramel colour; now, we’re almost at the good part. Drop in a dash of vanilla extract, depending on your personal preference. Then, add in 4 tablespoons of our Welsh Witch Spiced Rum and whisk once more. The mixture should look like silky golden caramel. If you’re a fan of salted caramel, feel free to add in a pinch of salt here too, but it’s not essential.

Now the hardest part is trying not to eat it straight out of the saucepan! You can drizzle it over your dessert while it’s still warm for that sticky toffee sauce feeling, or you can transfer it to a container to allow it to cool. If you let it cool and refrigerate the sauce, it will become more of a spreadable butter consistency, rather than a pourable sauce. If you want to make it in advance, you can warm it up again in the microwave for a minute or so, stirring frequently, or by remelting it in a saucepan.

Soul-soothing Welsh Witch Spiced Rum
